Message Have you ever considered the fact that you may not know as much as the "professionals" who designed the Z? Consider yourself one to take risks, which is commendable when it comes to your own self, but chill out when suggesting something to someone else that could be potentially dangerous.

How you gonna feel when people start replacing 100K mile engines after destroying bearings and they just happen to have UD pulleys? How you gonna feel when people start developing low compression and they just happen to have eliminated the EGR system when they rebuilt? Determining the actual cause of engine failure can be difficult and in many cases, one could come up with numerous explanations. You just dont know, so why risk it?

If you want to take risks with your stuff, by all means possible, you do so, get your own rocks off. But when it comes to others' belongings, I'd strongly suggest you take a back seat on your cavalier approach.

You are playing with fire and I cannot prove that UD pulleys are bad for Z's just as much as you cannot prove that they aren't bad, but they were are put there by ALL engine manufacturers. Maybe they are all wrong. Maybe not. The EGR system, same thing. We are both going on assumptions as well as what we have read here and there and have heard here and there. The fact is, neither one of us really know. In that case, the best thing one could do would be to just leave good enough alone and trust the engineers who are leaps and bounds above not only us, but every member in this forum. Jim Wolf included. (I'm saying here about Jim Wolf that he is knowledgeable, but not as knowledgeable. I dont know Jim Wolf personally, but he is a business man, not a engineer/physicist)

Any member here who wants to build an all-out race Z, one specifically designed for track use, I would feel safe in saying to eliminate some of the systems put in place by Nissan. The abuse the engine will take by cranking out 700+HP will far outweigh any negative effects from these other modifications. But really, how many people here are in that boat? Not many. Most of the members here want their Z's to last as long as they possibly can - of course some of them also want more power, which creates a catch-22 situation, but the thing to remember is this: replacing a VG is not a cheap proposition and one that most of us would try to avoid. Why would you so strongly suggest for someone to do something to their engine system that could have potentially dangerous effects? I dont know about you, but personally I like to take the safe route on these kinds of things that I can't "prove". An UD pulley, 12-16HP gain with the accepted risk that you may be harming your engine? For some this is a gamble that doesn't matter, monetarily. Plunking down $4-5K to replace an engine is a drop in the bucket to them.. For others, this may spell disaster. I speak for those people here.
